Afghan camel drivers were famous in the late 19th century and made a huge contribution to exploring Australia's desert areas. The train is named after the Afghan Express, which was the nickname given in 1923 by the railway-men to the passenger train that ran from Terowie, through Quorn to Oodnadatta. And after more than 100 years of discussion and $1.3 billion in investment the track was finally extended all the way to Darwin in 2004. A new standard-gauge railway track replaced the original in 1980.

It followed the same route as the telegraph through the centre of the country. It started in 1878 running out of Port Augusta, but it wasn't until 1929 that it made its way to Alice Springs and the Red Centre.

The Ghan has been operating for more than 80 years.
